Barbecue and beer sales up due to World Cup and sun

The World Cup and sustained sunshine have combined to send more people to the shops and pubs.

Spending last month rose at the fastest rate since 2016.

The latest Visa Spending Index, which measures the use of cash and electronic spending, was up 2.23pc in July compared with the same month last year.

Expenditure on food and drink rose strongly, along with spending on recreation and culture, according to the index.

There was an 8pc rise in sales of household goods, which includes items such as barbecues and garden furniture.

Significant growth was also recorded in the hotel, restaurant and bar sector. The index cites the World Cup as the main reason spending in pubs and restaurants was up by 5pc.

Food and drink spending continued to rise solidly, with a rise of 4.2pc.

The only category to see an outright decline in spending during July was clothing and footwear. There was a drop of 0.7pc in expenditure in the sector, ending an eight-month sequence of growth.

Online spending was up almost 5pc, compared with a rise of 1pc in the expenditure in physical stores. Country manager for Visa here Philip Konopik said the ongoing rise in Irish consumer spending reflected the buoyancy of the economy.
